I vote, but except for local races, it always comes down to who I think is the "least worst" candidate for the job. NOT the best, because there never is a best. A lot of people I know feel the same way, and consider voting a waste of time for that reason.

The parties do not want to really get the people out to vote, only the ones that will vote for them. The people see what happens after they vote them in, nothing. They then give up, rather than doing recalls, or voting them out the next time around. The more that vote the better chance we have of getting things done, and elect good people.

Simply put: pure apathy. They really don't care. Many believe their vote does not make a difference. That's so wrong to have that kind of thinking. Everyone should vote because those before us fought hard in order for us to be able to do so, especially if you are a woman or an african-american. You're vote CAN make a difference!

In many countries, it is mandated by law to vote and if you don't, you are fined. Greeces is a perfect example. That is why they have close to ninety percent voter turnout.

I'm not sure if that'd work here since we have it instilled in our psyches that we can do whatever we damn well please, and no law is going to change that unfortunately....

I live in Chicago where political groups scoop people off the street, put them on a bus, give them some lunch or $$, and tell them who to vote for. They even do this with Alzheimer's' patients at nursing homes! These people can cancel out my vote that I've researched and stayed on top of!

I'd much rather that those who vote be those who are personally motivated to support a specific candidate because they have kept on top of issues.

In the state of Texas our Governor Perry had enough never to come onto our televisions after we twice voted down an excessive tax increase, and tell us that our votes did not matter. He was going to enforce the tax increase because it is a moral issue.
In my city we do not get to vote on city issues, we are allowed to come and speak on our behalf at city council meetings, but the ultimate vote is thiers, and we have no say so.
In my city of Lubbock Texas our city council has put into place illegal religiously moral influenced policies in place, then illegally enforces them as law.
One example is being ticketed for a child laughing out in choir class. The ticket is a two hundred dollar ticket, and if you refuse to pay it, a warrant will be issued costing as little as $1500.00, and you can be locked up with murders and child preditors, armed robbers, ect. if a warrant is issued and you refuse, or can not pay it.
If a warrant is issued additional court fines, and court costs as high as three hundred dollars can, and will be imposed. Now they are going to impose a $500.00 fine on any parent that misses a parent teacher meeting, refusal has the same consequences as the above mentioned ticket.
We citizens voted down turning our city into a policed city as is our right to live without fear of the police, yet our city council has decided that our vote did not count, and that it is a moral issue, and we now have the largest and still growing police force for a city our size in the nation.
We also have the highest crime to go along with it.
With the high increase of police, and illegal tactics being impose such as endangering citizens in their persuit of criminals, I have seen my fellow citizens become more and more desperate, and the crime levels have sky rocketed.
That is why people no longer vote, we are told all to often that our rights are not a priority, and the citizens have little value other than to keep politians gaining wealth.
In my community the citizens forced an investigation into the tax defrauding of hundreds of our citizens, and it was founded.
In the state of Texas your land and home are vulnerable to being extorted out from beneath you, and the supreme court upheld this illegal law, as it is described in the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, and the Constition.
Our own president has made it clear that the voice of the people is a voice he can disregard as irrelvant.
The president has made the American Constitution a Mockery, and the world knows it. Why do you think the world scoffs when they hear him even speak of a Constitution, and it being the savior of the people, the entire world knows he has banished our constitution while trying to convince the Iraqi people that a constitution will be their savior.
In this case it is The Declaration of Independence that enforces our bill of rights, and constitution, and without it both documents might as well be recycled for toliet paper, they would have about the same value.
I see an angry country as my homeland, and the corruption of our officials has made America no better than Mexico, Africa, or Asia. The Declaration of Independence was designed because our ancestors were all to aware of the brutality that follows a governmental rule over the people.
And so, freedom was assured through the people running the government, but sadly in my life time I have watched the American Eagle turn into the American Chicken because the people will no longer defend our home land.
I have been searching for years for away to stop if not slow down the unconstitutional behavior of my city, but they feel if the president can treat us with such disregard so can they.
Every day I am told about places where the citizens are spied on, and I am told this is a good thing, when every American knows it is not because our government shows no good judgement when it comes to the people.
I was raised that just because all of my friends were doing something did not mean that I had to, but that is the propaganda spewed through the media and government as to what we should do. Jump right off that bridge with them, and as long as they get their thrill (money) they could care less what happens to you when you hit the bottom.

Very good question. It makes me think about the soldiers at Valley Forge in the American Revolutionary War, freezing and starving, to fight for my right to vote.

People who don't vote should be ashamed of themselves. But, shame has almost ceased to exist in this country.

One philosophical way to determine whether an action is right or wrong is to ask, "What if everybody did this?" One person not voting doesn't sound dramatic, but when only 30% of the voters vote, then this is a real disgrace, made up of zillions of individuals deciding not to vote.

The right (and privilege) to vote is sacred in our nation, and that means we have to accept whatever decision voters make, so I can't say some people shouldn't vote. Everybody should vote, and everybody should vote intelligently.

It's because most people don't like who is running and they think those are currently running for president wouldn't even bother telling the truth in the first place.
