YES metamucil is good for constipation but make sure you drink lots of purified water or the psyillium husks in it wont absorbe enough water and could cause choking and just not work as good
also try not eating cheese and eat more fruits and veggies and other roughage they are hidrating to your body when you put in dry stuff it comes out kinda dry you and then you cant go. doctors say its normal to have a bowel movement 1 a day to once every three days.but that is still not healthy! if you go longer then three days without a bowel movement you risk getting a bowel obstrustion and my grandmother had surgery for just such a thing .very very painfull .a person with an efficient digestion system goes #2 at least 2 or 3 times per day within 15 or 30 minutes of meal is considered very healthy.

Metamucil is primarily Psyllium Seed Husk. Its a safe, low cost, way to treat constipation. it should be used sort-term only, and only to get over an immediate problem. If the problem persists see a physician and make sure that he/she gets a complete history. Changes in lifestyle including aging can cause this problem.

Long term, changes in diet that include much more fruit and other high fiber foods is the right way to go (pardon the pun).

Other things you can do: More water, get rid of the soda and coffee if you can. Exercise: walking is the best, and its darn near free.

**Please do talk with your dr especially if having constipation on a rather regular basis as it may be something more serious. For me, along with diet modifications such as others have mentioned, eating more fibrous foods such as fruits, veggies, whole grains, I take another fiber supplement I suppose very similar to metamucil, however, it doesn't 'repeat' like metamucil does (did). The fiber capsule that I take that has the psyllium husks as well is called Fibermucil by Andrew Lessman who tends to go on home shopping network (hsn) and talk about his products (he has a Ph.D/doctorate in chemistry). I don't use any other fiber cap but that one, and it doesn't make one feel as though the capsule is stuck in the throat. www.hsn.com

Best Constipation Cures

The best thing I know for constipation is to drink loads of water. It really works!
I was on Vancomycin once, and eating hospital food, but they said to drink 4 litres of water a day. I obviously had very little fibre in the diet in hospital, but with all that water, I was doing normal (solid) poo 6 times a day but actually found that I wouldn't have needed to use toilet paper--now that's when you know your innard are clean.

Will Metamucil make you have constipation or loose bowels?

I would advise not to use a psyllium product for your intestinal cleanser. Fiber tends to be a bulking agent and tends to cause more problems. One of the problems with cleansers that use psyllium is that tend to strip the body of important minerals.I use a product called Oxy-Powder which is an oxygen-based product. The product converts your compaction from a solid form into a liquid or gas.

If you would like more information on these differences between the oxygen based colon cleansers and herbal cleansers, you can visit

Metamucil is ok, but what you really have to do is increase the fiber content in your diet... as in the foods you eat regularly, not in supplements. Think Raisin Bran, Oatmeal, whole wheat bread and fresh fruit. Forget the soda, white bread and macdonalds.

It is good for regulating your bowels. Be sure you take it with plenty of water or juice. If you need immediate relief use a suppository but to help long term with constipation yes it is good. Try to find out what is causing your constipation though and eliminate the cause. Also if your stools are hard use a stool softener such as Colace aka docusate to help soften your stools till you get this under control.
