The explosion that traps Lex in the cave causes serious injury to Lionel. Martha visits him in the hospital, where he is gravely hurt.
- Some of Martha's feelings for Lionel have to be faced in this story. At the same time, the cave trap causes Clark and Lex re-evaluate the choices they have made, and Clark wonders if he was wrong to close the door on Lex the way he has. Not in the long run. In case you're not familiar with the Superman legend: as an adult, Lex Luthor ends up as Superman's arch-nemesis and a ruthless criminal.
(There could be a temporary reconciliation between the two, but in the long run, they're doomed to be enemies.)
