Yes, they use it to do a background check on applicants. Also, they can verify with social security whether or not you are authorized to work in the U.S.
Can not ask your date of birth (they have to have you call the background checking company and give it to them). Can not ask if you are married, single or divorced. Can not ask you health related questions (unless you are applying for research or doctor's office).

I used to work at an ice cream parlor and for those applicants that filled out the applications that were submitted to the manager who didn't bother to fill out their social security number on it, will get thrown away. The manager didn't bother to interview them at all. Social Security taxes has to be taken out. So, if you want a job, it is best to apply for one.

I asked my supervisor at work. Employers will usually do a check on you, most over the internet now, and they do need your SS# for that. You can try not putting it down but they may ask you for it, and if you don't give it, they may feel you have something to hide and won't consider your application any further.

Here in Texas they can, Especially if they run a criminal background on someone. You have to have a social secuiryt number and birth date to do a check. Also if someone doesn't have a social they are not legal to work in this country.

They can, just because some employers need to do background checksand verify your identity, and it helps to have as much info as possible to get the correct results. You may ask them if this is the case, then its ok, but if they dont actually NEED it, then you can also leave it blank just to keep your identity safe.

No law says you have to give it to them.
