ABSOLUTELY! and we know that some people are worse than others. I, for instance, tend to dwell on bad times in the past. Now what the heck is that accomplishing?
People (me) tend to put off happiness. "I'll be happy when this project is over." "I'll be happy when we get a bigger house." You know the drill. Why do we put off our happiness when, as you well know, when we achieve these goals, there are more goals you need to be happy.
Living in the present is hard. I don't know why but I have theories. I think that living in the present, and enjoying what you're doing at this moment, feels almost selfish. What have I done to deserve this happiness? How can I possibly be this relaxed and happy when I have obligations? I think there is guilt involved in happiness. Yuck, how awful.
I'm not a nut, but now I try to get into the Zen of what I'm doing. I hate ironing, but if I do it slowly and lovingly, all of a sudden it's not a chore. Ditto folding towels. I used to hate making my kid his lunch in the morning until someone told me: this is the way you show love to your son. You as a woman are a nurturer.
Some people develop a personal life mission to live by. Mine is to contribute something beautiful to the world as often as possible, to be honest, and to continue to learn for the rest of my life.

I see it a bit differently. I think that we focus on the tiny handful of negatives in our lives so much that we don't notice the overwhelmingly positive nature of life.
The evening news is a great example. They scour the entire world to find a half hour of bad news to tell us about. Yet if we just look around us there are people loving their children, taking care of their Friends and neighbors and in general just being the best that they can be under the circumstances that they are faced with.
This ignoring the positive aspects of life and wallowing in the tiny percentage of negativity makes people see the world as a threatening place rather than the loving place that it truly is.

I think society does focus entirely too much on the negative aspects of life. For instance: why does your bad credit follow you for basically forever:? Why does someones criminal record follow them. People do change. This country is always looking to go to war with someone. Life is real messed up sometimes. I just try to be happy and in my own world.

yes, its certainly true.
Take for instance, the news channels. They focus so much on the bad things happening, that sometimes i wonder whether there is anything good left in this world.
And, i'm pretty damn sure, good things happen...but no one knows it is happening. A news is news only when it is something grave. In fact, when you say, "NEWS", it brings to mind only the events of this nature.
Nice question.

I think its a problem we all face. Sometimes the bad overwhelmes the good. I used to be badly depressed and I was so focused on being unhappy that I forgot about everything that makes my life good. I was lost but I found my way back. Its not impossible.

many many people do.
But its a choice. Others choose to remember the good, sometimes to the point that they don't even learn a lesson from the bad.
In the long run it takes both to make life worth living.

Damn I'm hungry. I have to put air in my tires. My taxes!!
Life is suffering -- a perpetual maintenance job. It's natural to focus on the bad things in order to survive.

Yes, we often look at how big the mountain is and impossible to lift, but rarely do we focus on the stones beneath our feet, that we may pick up and toss with ease.
