Residential pumps can be either. Some shallow wells have 120v or 240v. The deep well pumps are all 240v.

As a couple of the previous answers have stated, most pump motors, if it's a good quality pump like Flint & Walling or Dayton or some of the other better manufacturers, will be capable of using either voltage. It usually depends on what you as a homeowner have available. If you have a large amount of amperage available to operate your home, or shop or whatever building the pump is in, then you should run a separate circuit for the pump and use the 220 volt system. The pump will draw less amps, although it will use more voltage. Drawing less amperage will allow it to run much cooler and more efficiently. If you do much lawn watering or fill a swimming pool with the household pump, it will last much longer on the higher voltage. It is, however, not something you should mess with unless you're very familiar with electrical systems and procedures.

Actually they use 240 volts. The reason being that it is more efficient to run the higher voltage down the well because of losses in the cable. Can they run on 120 volts, sure.
Many water wells are several hundred feet deep. If you tried to operate them with the lower voltage the pump would heat up because the 120volts might only be 90 or so volts at the pump.

If you are talking about submersible pumps, you can get both. Some are dual voltage. If your water well is very deep (60 feet or more), I would definitely install the 240 volt pump. It will run more economically and should last quite a bit longer than the 120 volt.

It should say on the pump - it depends on the needs of the building. If you're going to work on this yourself, you should really invest in a voltmeter anyway.
You can tell by the plug, if it's not hardwired - if the plug is a non-standard shape, that's because it's on a non-standard voltage. Also, the circuit-breaker/fuse may have a higher rating. But the easiest way is to read the unit, or get a voltmeter.

Are you asking if a water pump can paintings with out the presence of water everywhere? Or are you asking if a water pump can paintings with out any water in it? If the question is the latter, the respond is specific. some pumps are what they call self priming, meaning they could pull the water as much as then even while they initiate off out dry or ordinarily dry. i assume that in case you think of approximately it, a water pump can paintings with different supplies alongside with molasses or syrup so as that they could perform with out the presence of water besides.

Most are either, some have a small switch, some you have to rearrange some wires in them, The cover plate on the motor will explain which colors to connect for the appropiate voltage.
