My car is a 01 olds alero. When i start my car on cold weather it sounds like the engine want to rattle apart only for about 2 sec. but my main concern is that sometimes when im late for work i drive off with a cold engine the car will not go even if it accelerate a bit. (oops) I have to let it warm up. I've never had a car do that. I havent checked the fluid because it has no dipstick. It has the cap to fill only. Any advice very appreciated!

Hi

I have a 98 Chev Malibu. I believe its the same as your Alero.

The 3.1L V6 has a piston slap problem. That would explain the rattle on start up. Keep the engine oil clean and use the proper grade too. Don't push the engine too hard when it's cold. This worsens this condition.

The transmission has no dipstick. If it hasn't leaked out, it's probably still in there. Almost any transmission shop will be glad to take it for a free check.

Check your owners manual on the service requirements. I believe GM says no service is ever required with this transmission.

Hi guy, sorry to tell you there is no dip stick on the transmission on your car. There is a plug on the transmission just by the drive axle on the right side. Oil level should be up to the plug hole. Rattle when cold, most probably piston chuckle, not unheard of on that engine. Yes warm it up a little and keep your boot out of it till it is warmed up and it will run you for many more miles.

I believe the transmission fluid on my 5.7 chevy engine is at the back near the windshield, but I dont' think thats the problem with your car.

it should be back by the firewall. it is a tube app one half inch to three quarters ib diameter. it could be hiding down lower too. even if you find it , it isnt the ptoblem. the problem is your engine. if you notice a slippage, such as engine racing, and you arent going anywhere much, THEN you could have a transmission problem. never the less, you should find it anyhow. look closely.

The next time you get gas, go to a station that does repairs and have one of the mechanics show you or just ask them to check the fluid and watch him to see where he checks it.
