The Kansas City Penguins doesn't sound very good. Is there any debate in KC as to what to name the team?

They won't be the penguins probably, and Kansas City already had a team called the Monarchs, so they won't be that either. They could be anything, but probably not the Chiefs or Royals, being that those names are already taken.

There is precedent in Major League Baseball and the NFL for re-using the name of a team that had moved: The expansion Washington Senators in 1961 (original Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961); the Washington Nationals (formerly the Montreal Expos) in 2005, the origianl Washington Nationals became the Washington Senators in the 1950's; the Baltimore Orioles (former St. Louis Browns, moved to Baltimore in 1954) the original Orioles were a National League team that folded in 1899; the expansion Milwaukee Brewers (same franchise as the St. Louis Browns, moved to St. Louis in 1902).

In the NFL, through a series of technicalities, the Cleveland Browns essentially became an expansion team re-using the name after their owner took the old franchise to Baltimore. The deal was convoluted so, in an exact legalistic sense, the Browns are still the same franchise as before the Ravens move, but as a practical matter, it is a re-use.

In baseball, the expansion Colorado Rockies took the same name as the NHL team that has moved from KC and later moved to New Jersey.

Also, there is a history of teams using the same name in baseball and football in the same city: New York Giants; St. Louis Cardinals; and similar names: Detroit Tigers/Lions; Chicago Cubs/Bears; Baltimore Orioles/Ravens; New York Mets/Jets/Nets. So it would be most likely be possible for KC to re-use the Scouts name, if they wanted, or the Monarchs, Royals, Chiefs, Athletics, etc.

Other possibilites might have tie-ins with the history and/or geography of the KC area: Plainsmen; Voyageurs; Cowboys; Wranglers; or Jazz.

But I would rather see them stay in Pittsburgh or move to Winnipeg. Kansas City has a metro population almost three times the size of Winnipeg, but maybe not as many hockey fans, so it might be a tough decision for an owner or for the league.

Does it matter? They'll just move again in a few years. ...and once the Penguins slip out of Pittsburgh, watch teams start to move around --- like Nashville, Phoenix, Carolina for starters. While there may be some good places (Seattle, Winnipeg) to land a team, the real truth is the NHL needs FEWER teams.

Either:

The team with bandwagon fans that showed up to late to stop the team formerly known as the Penguins from moving to Kansas City.

or

Kansas City Tumble weeds

I think that has been decided, the move or if the name and colors would change. If Pittsburgh is smart, and the team tries to leave, they will take them to court and force them to leave the team name, colors and statistics in Pittsburgh for a future NHL team to use. That's what the City of Cleveland did to the NFL Browns when Art Modell moved the franchise to Baltimore.

Damn Desperado....Now that's funny!!!

dont care, but i say they are staying in pittsburgh.

the city would riot if they left.

on second thought...

let them leave, i wanna see what would happen.

just playing. as a pens fan i say they should stay in pittsburgh, but if they do move to KC whats wrong with penguins? hell i think that half the names in the NHL sound bad (who in the hell names their team the Maple Leafs or the Capitals? jesus christ it cannot be that hard...)

I doubt they would pick a name they had already used, so Monarchs and Scouts are both out. Also they can't have a name that is too similar to another teams, so my guess is the Blackhawks will stop them from any Indian names.

I really have no idea what they would name a team if they were to get one. Too bad they arn't going to get the Penguins so we will never find out

Who cares? I think they should change their names to the "Gary Bettman is ruining our league."
