Vitamin C helps your body fight off all kinds of infection, both viral and bacterial. It also strengthens blood vessels, including capillaries, so you bruise less easily. The government recommended amount is enough to keep you from getting scurvy but it's far from optimal. It is perfectly safe at the level of 1-3 grams (1,000--3,000 mg) a day, and that amount will usually keep you from catching colds, etc. I have used Vitamin C in 1-2 gram daily amounts for about 35 years and have had no bad effects from it. I never catch colds, but I did get sick from food poisoning a couple of years ago, so it doesn't mean you'll never get sick again, just that you'll get sick a lot less than if you did not take it.
