I'm presuming this is a really complicated process, and I don't actually have any laws I want to change (with the exemption of certain marriage laws!) but say, a law is really stupid or outdated - whose attention would I bring the matter to? I live in England.

Law is changed/born in Parliament, and therefore mainly by ministers of departments, local authorities and some bodies such as RSPCA. Law has also seen to be changed by campaigning from enough members of public (eg CSA, Poll Tax etc etc) I would suggest on these facts that if you wish to have yourself heard you would need to approach your local MP

Laws are legislated and enacted by Legislative Assemblies and Parliaments by majority of votes of members. A single citizen cannot change them. At the most, one can vote a person of his choice at the time of elections for those Houses.

Start with your local MP. Write to the Lord Chancellor. Write to The Prime Minister. Tell each person what you propose and ask them for their views on your proposal. If you are not satisfied, stand for Parliament, get elected and present an Early Day motion with your proposed change to the law.

You can contact your local councillor if it is by law,MP if it is Statute law.If you get in a complicated legal situation the court of appeal could rule in favour creating case law.Otherwise you cant but can only influence it by voting - that's if you trust politicians

I've got a better idea. why dont we have an ignorance law. When people start talk bollocks, they get charged on the spot by special ignorance police ( It would create more jobs which also makes it economically freindly ).

Start at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. I've seen that small time mayors and leaders seem to do more than the ones at the top.

Write to your member of parliament, who probably holds "surgeries" every so often, so you could speak to them in person.

Or, you could join a political party and seek to get elected as an MP yourself. That could take a long time, though.

the first logical step would be to appear break that law, secondly get arrested for it, thirdly get on the front pages of the national press, fourthly kick up a stink in court, finally plead your innocence until the day you die thus becoming a martyr to your cause.

ps, don't take me too seriously.

Your local MP and then in typical MP terms he will bore you senseless with 1001 excuses as to why it can't be changed when in reality he can't be bothered to look it up!
