Use 'an' for all words starting with a vowel or an H. No exceptions.
By the way, for one of the earlier answers, ear is not pronounced year. Further, y is sometimes a vowel- fry, by, cry.
People frighten me with their ignorance. I fear the future of our race, seriously.

I was taught that it should be 'a' if the first sound of the word is a consonant, as in...a dog, a cat. It should be 'an' if the first sound of the word is a vowel, as in...an elephant, an owl. It depends on the sound not the letter because of silent letters like 'h'....dinner will be ready in an hour not ready in a hour. Make sense?

An ear. Just remember if a word starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) that "an" comes before the word, not "a". Also, if a word starts with "ho", such as honor.

its A EAR, coz ear is pronounced as YEAR, and Y is not a vowel. likewise, it is AN HONOUR, and not A HONOUR, coz H is silent
