Because they impose a false concept of what it means to be a woman. Being a woman isn't about glamour, sex, expensive shoes, high times in hollywood, etc. Most women have to get married, get a career, have kids, etc. Britany Spears has proven over and over again that she can't handle these sorts of things, no matter how hard she tries. Could you imagine Paris Hilton with a child? I feel sorry for that sickly dog she carries around.

The first answer put a nice twist to it, but honestly its the individual that decides who he/she wants to be, so you cannot blame that society for their poor choices.
These celebrities have a negative impact because of the way they live their personal life. Young teens and adults look up to them as role models. To be actresses, singers, and entrepreneurs and at that the same feel that living the "celebrity life" is going out, do drugs, get drunk, even go to rehab while thinking that this is cool and normal.
Unfortunately, they cant follow other celebrities, like Amanda Bynes and Cristina Agulira who control their social lives.

For some reason, our society is so bored with their own lives that they have to get into the business of famous people. These girls aren't special in any way, they are just anorexic, airbrushed and paid to party! These aren't the kind of role models we need from the news channels to the tabloids, so much focus is on these people that it just ends up ruining their lives too, look at Britney Spears, come on now, don't we have anything better to talk about?

They appear to place more focus on clothing, partying, sex and catfights than they do on things that can actually improve a person's life, such as education. Unfortunately, these are often the only role models that young girls have, since they're so visible, and they don't promote the best values.

Because they reflect and perpetuate the very worst aspects of behaviour--in particular, female behaviour.

I am not ancient, so please don't think I am a senior citizen for saying this, but: 30-years-ago.....maybe even less.....lowlife tarts like that would never have a front seat to media hype. Sure, a few got through the cracks, but these girls really seem to take the proverbial stale cake.

I thought it was bad in the 80's and 90's.

I am not sure about the negative impact. I think we all enjoy to a certain sick degree their downfalls. It reassures us that our lives as nonfamous people are overall more rewarding.
Plus, when you are at a party and don't want to discuss politics, these broads are great conversation fodder because everyone can agree they are all messes.
