Im not really a new driver but I am a new car owner - mercedes 350sdl 1991. I would assume to change the oil and filter and copper washers every spring or every spring/fall if I have been driving a lot in the city (which is where I live). But what about "general maintenance", "inspection" "tune-up."

I dont really understand the differences between these terms. Can someone explain to me exactly what each is for and when I should have each done.

Are these general terms.. like if I go to the service station and ask for an inspection, are there different kinds or is it a general-purpose thing that will inspect everything.

Thanks.

The owner's manual has a maintenance schedule.

Hi

"Tune up" is a very vague term in the auto industry.
I,ve always associated it with replacing things like spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. A diesel engine has a different kind of tune up, adjust the valves and fuel timing, replaceing fuel and air filters, etc.

Look at the cars owners manual. It will tell you the proper maintenance. The dealer will try to sell you a ton of stuff. Always follow the owners manual.

A Mercedes 350 SDL...I'm not too familiar with Mercedes but I believe that's a diesel, right?

I would be inclined to keep service at the dealer.

A tune up needs to be done every 60000 miles in which the spark plugs, all belts including the timing belt which is most important needs replaced. During the tuneup your mechanic will inspect just about everything. Get a new batery every 60 months too. Change your oil and lube your ballings every 3000 miles. Make sure your tires have the correct psi in them and check your oil 1 a month.

inspection is just what it says it is... they inspect all of the car... atleast the major parts... like your springs, your brakes... your carb(if applicable) and various other important parts of the car. they do this mainly for preventative maintenance... if they fix it before it becomes a problem... it saves you time and money.
general maintenance includes oil changes, timing belt changes, water pump replacements, and other belt replacements. genenral maintennace isa onther way to do preventative maintennance
tune up is where they adjust your fuel injectors or carb, replace your spark plugs and wires, air filter, timing and other thigs to mainly make the car run better and again for preventative maintenance.

oh and you should probably change your oil about every 3000 miles... or every 3 months if you dont do as much highway driving
