This is quite common for me. I see that more people are experiencing it of late and it does startle them. But it isn't a dream even though it sometimes appears to be. Many have described it as you have. I have found it to be a positive event just as white in dreams is symbolic of peace, awareness, purity, etc.

This white light has many variations and comes when your mind is in a meditative state or in the dream state. It can come in a sudden burst or even like an explosion. It can sneak up on you, glide across your vision, or you suddenly find yourself surrounded by it.

The bursting ones still startle me on occasion as it is like looking in a dark room and suddenly a camera flash goes off. But I've had some very interesting experiences with the lights if I remain calm and stay with them.

Not that you may want to but if your interest peaks, you can promote them. When you go to bed, close your eyes but stare straight ahead as if your are trying to see through the dark. The white light will come almost every time.

The white light keeps changing for me, lately it slowly appears to the corner and images pop up from them.

White represents purity, perfection, peace, innocence, dignity, cleanliness, awareness, and new beginnings. You may be experiencing a reawakening or have a fresh outlook on life. However, in Eastern cultures, white is associated with death and mourning.

This often refers to greater awareness, to clearness of mind and purity. It also may suggest cleanness or light feelings. Sometimes white is felt as very threatening in a dream. This may link with memories of white painted hospital wards, or bed sheets
