I'd like to hear a sounding off of people that can honestly read sheet music.

I see questions posted here in this area all the time about Linkin Park Cd's and Avril Lyrics, who is the better rapper, and American Idol. What is never see is: "How many sharps are there in the key of A Major?".

Music is a language. It has it's own alphabet, it has it's own syntax, and with it you can communicate complex information.

In recent years this language has been diluted and fewer people can actually read music and/or lack the language to discuss even basic theoretical musical ideas.

Imagine a parallel with your own language,.. I often imagine what it would be like if very few people could read or write english, but yet they were the same people in charge of bringing us the news, or the movies we watch, our TV programs, educational & scientific programs,.. Would the world be what it could be,..or should be?

Whether you know it or not, in the world of music, this is happening.

I can read music, I also believe it's not really that important. There is a lot crappy music written by people who can read, just look at the modern state of jazz. Knowing and understanding music theory is very crucial but to be able to sight read off of a piece of paper...not really. Some people are born with an inate sense timing, melody, and harmony...I know some of them, who cares if they can't read? They speak the language better than most. Music is from the heart, soul, brain...not from a piece of paper.
