There is a paradox in the whole time travel situation, if indeed it will be possible to travel back in time in the future, wouldn't we know it? By now wouldn't someone have came back in time to inform the past that there will be time machines in the future? If in fact there will be time travel in the future then what would stop some one from going back to say the birth of our nation, giving our founding fathers all kinds of up to date history books and technology and making America the only country in the world, there would also be a butterfly effect in time, because every action that the founding fathers would do to change the future would cause a new version of the same history book that the time travelers brought back, untill inevitably the book would say, "America wins all, end of story", or they would screw up the future so bad that there would be no time travel and the meeting would never take place.

Yes we would know it, unless somehow they knew that doing it would prove to spell disaster. Thereby, I conclude that if the technology is ever developed in the future, it is never used. As for "by now", I have to disagree vehemently. Our technology is nowhere close to time travel as the theories are described. I do not believe we went 240k miles to the moon in 3 days either. Left Earth's orbit at 24k/mph to go there in 3 days. Came back in 3 days. Last moon flight: 1972. Furthest manned mission from Earth since: 350 miles. Talk about a regression in technology!

Time travel to the past is NOT possible, as far as we know, but Einstein DID posit a minuscule amount of time travel to the future, by moving at the speed of light. Still, if it were happening, yes, we'd know, for the reason somebody gave of people coming back and tinkering with things, like the stock market, their lives and world events in general.

The best "time trips" can be had via self-hypnosis and/or a few microdots!

there could be a future rule in time travel - a law against interacting with people from the past. see "the stewie griffin story" episode of family guy.
