It beats just beheading them.
It makes the Americans squirm.
It does not make the Infidels conclude as a nation that we are the enemy like when we just murdered 3000 of the weak on 9/11.
Oh, you wanted the answer from an American point of view.

The idea is that torture (or the idea of torture) will scare your enemies into divulging information. It intimadates a captive to cooperate. It also scares other prisoners to talk; if you see a colleague be tortured then it might scare you into talking before your session starts.
Studies show that while torture can be effective it is usually counter-productive, that captives will say anything (meaning they will lie or make things up that they think the torturer will accept) to stop the torture.
But who tortures people to fight terrorism??? I think you are wrong if you are implying that torture is being used to fight terrorism. These are just a indefinite period time of "fraternity pranks" we are playing with prisoners. That's what I hear all the time by people who would really know of these things.

You do what you can to get information out of people. You know - where's the rest of your cell, where are their weapons, what building were they going to try to blow up - that's the sort of information you'll do anything to get.
Different people say different things about how useful it is - some people take the line from Reservoir Dogs that if you beat a guy long and hard enough he'll tell you he started the Chicago fire.... Some people say it's effective.
I suppose the question underlying all of this is what "it" is - we simply don't do the things that were done to our POWs in Vietnam and we obviously don't do the things that the terrorists do, like beheading prisoners. We dress them up in costumes for pictures, we make them form naked pyramids, we play with the lights and the AC and we keep them up with loud music. I have no idea if any of this accomplishes anything - not likely - and it's unprofessional and kind of whacky - I wouldn't put up with it in my camp simply because it's silly. But calling it a war crime diminishes true war crimes - about half the countries in the world rip teeth out and break limbs and kick you in the balls and rip your fingernails out - we impose something less than soft-porn and everybody gets up in arms. If it's already your job to be in charge of the interrogation than you shouldn't let it go on, but if you're an activist, look there are a lot worse things to get into a tizzy over.

Its not.
Its prohibited by our Constitution.
Under torture, people tell the torturer what he wants to hear, not facts, its worthless as a tool.
Its morally wrong. Stalin and Hitler and Idi Amin and all kinds of evil people did it, we should not join them.
It is a horrible precedent to set. If we accept torture for cases of terrorism it is inevitable we will begin to accept it for other cases, too and before you know it we will be right back in the Dark Ages with people being ripped to pieces and set on fire for minor offenses. It is not a path to ever start down.
Just Say NO to torture.

Interesting choice of words, worthy vs appropriate.
I don't know if there's any answer, other than a moral one, with those words.
So if you want morality, it's this.
An eye for an eye does not make it right.
Exorcising a cancer can save a life.
Bottom line is that it really isn't needed. It's probably good for the terrorist to show his friends. A badge of honor.

It is shameful U.S. forces have resorted to torture, well known to do little in giving away valid secrets from an enemy. Even scarier is this, one poll had americans supporting torture against our enemies. We have sunk to new lows as a culture because our elected officials have. Leadership should stop this, now, and, forever.

Torture is a tool used by some people and or governments and not by others.
It is a moral choice. Moral people and governments do not torture. Immoral people and governments torture.

No. The FBI does not use torture because they know that the information gained by torture is completely unreliable.
