You want to know my theory?
Because there are so many exceptions to the rules for the rich.
If we all could just pay evenly in sales tax, i think it would MUCH EASIER, AND MUCH FAIRER, AND EVERYBODY PAYS ACCORDING TO THEIR CONSUMPTION!!
what is yours? for or against the complication?

TO THE ANSWERER NAMED JAMES BELOW:
YES, I CAN SEE YOUR POINT THERE, BUT I THINK MOST PEOPLE WHO HAVE A 100,000 DOLLARS TO JUST SAVE IN THE BANK ARE OKAY. IF YOU ARE NOT "BENEFITING" WITH YOUR MONEY THAN YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON IT.
ALSO I THINK MANY "RICH" PEOPLE DO NOT JUST SAVE THEIR MONEY, THEY MOVE IT AROUND BUYING STOCKS , PROPERTY , ETC.

THE ONLY TAXES THERE SHOULD BE IS AN EVEN PERCENTAGE OF THINGS THAT YOU BUY. A HOUSE , YOU PAY TAXES ON ONE TIME (WHEN YOU BUY IT) AND THAT IS THE ONLY TIME.

Because the rich pay -- by far -- the most taxes, just about anything you do to improve and simplify taxation will have the affect of letting the rich pay less. And we can't allow that, can we?
So, I'm hip to the struggle bro', but the Byzantine tax system is the direct result of the fact that one of the two major political parties incessantly accuses the other of pandering to the rich, being the party of the rich, stealing from the poor to give to the rich, waging war on children, etc etc etc etc etc - I forget which party is which :)
And so income tax policy is a constant compromise where intelligent ideas are always counterbalanced by idiotic demagoguery that politicians use to get dumb people who don't know how to do their taxes, and so have no real understanding of how taxation works, to re-elect them. (Duh, if I get a refund that means I didn't have to pay any taxes, right??)
So we complicate every good idea with screens and exceptions and legalese to narrow down it's applicability -- and in the name of "progressive taxation" we put layers of complexity on everything -- so that now you have to read yet another IRS publication and buy software and hire a CPA just to figure out whether do or do not get to deduct that $317 you managed to put into your IRA.

The answer is that the tax system has so many brackets, to try and make it fair, so that the rich pay more; however, this doesn't work due to politcally motivated exemptions, which complicate it further.
The irony of your argument, since you seem to believe the rich should pay more tax, is that the poor end up paying more with an even sales tax.
If sales tax is 10%, then someone earning $10,000, as they are likely to need to spend it all in order to survive, will have 10% of income taxed, i.e. $1000. However, someone earning $100,000 will not need to spend it all - realistically, they might spend $60,000. 10% of this is $6000 - only 6% of their income. So the poor is paying 4% more than the rich person.
This is a simplistic example, but it makes you think, huh?

No even tax paying throughout the board could be unfair so could regressive tax(the better the income the a lot less you pay).undesirable ppl could be paying an identical tax because the prosperous, so as that they could have a lot less funds to spend.i imagine ingenious taxation(the better the income the more suitable you pay) is the perfect and also the fairly prosperous could be compelled to furnish a percentage of there annual internet income to some starting place(for the undesirable, help babies, the blind or the different charity). Now which could be honest!! Take some stress off undesirable ppl, so as that they have stay very actual too. the prosperous gained't experience it.All they do is waste funds and take coke, they do no longer something reliable eith their funds, spend it on foolishness and they nonetheless arn't chuffed.i could be so chuffed and in no way do truly some the garbage they do with their funds, placed it to reliable use and help out others who won't be able to manage to pay for it, who're in genuine desire of it.existence is co unfair.

My husband and I together cleared $100,000 for last year's income. So we are middle class.
I think that taxes should stay as they are with paying some sales tax on items and then putting in for state tax from your check. There are certain states (Texas for sure) that just pay the sales tax and no state tax comes out their checks or have to pay at the end of the year.
I really don't think that anyone should have to pay tax on food or clothing. I don't think that vehicles should be taxed unless it is the first owner sale.
My brother in law is an accountant and does our taxes for free!

I'm AGAINST the complications! LOL
In fact, I'm totally for the fair tax system.

This would catch all the illegal money in the USA (IE: drug money, illegal aliens, etc) and make things easier on those of us that have to buy everything used.
