I dont agree with the harvesting of certain whales and for the most part the way they are taken. The Japanese are the worst at the humane harvesting of whales, they harpoon them then suffocate them by lifting the tail out of the water so the blow hole cant reach the surface. I seen it first hand in 1992. I believe that a responsible conservation effort would help. I am a hunter and a fisherman but I do not let the animal/fish suffer or at least keep it to a minimum. I cant say that I would outlaw whaling because it has been a mainstay for certain cultures long before we came along to decide it was wrong. With cooperation of all nations in a International onservation effort I believe that a annual harvest of certain whales along with more humane ways to take the mammal would lessen the strain between whalers and the rest of the world. The taking of animals, fish is a necessary part of an ecosystem. We as humans are a big part of the food chain. To take us out of the equation would be like taking the lions of the plains of Africa. As we get larger in numbers as a whole the harvest will become bigger and more abundent. Only through conservation and cooperation will all species be around for the taking of food and enjoyment.

I think that all of the organizations working to stop this are doing the best that they can.
In response to Common Sense's answer, sinking ships... just randomly? If we, or another nation, were to find a ship in the middle of the ocean, deploy a destroyer or something like it, and sink the ship while in the middle of the ocean, it would destroy the wildlife, INCLUDING whales around it. The oil, gasoline, etc. that would leak from the ship, would not only pollute the ocean, it could catch on fire, and destroy more than what is in the general area on the "disaster". This is a double-edged sword as well... while it MAY send a message to other whaling ships, it will create a man-made habitat for corals, fish, etc. that dwell in the area...
Those are just my thoughts, so feel free to take them as you choose...

The Sea Shepherd society is probably the group most active in attempting to stop whaling.
They have interposed themselves between whalers and whales, and even rammed whaling boats to get them to stop.
As you can imagine, this doesn't exactly endear them to the whalers.
Recently, they rammed one whaling vessel that then caught fire, and threatened to capsize, threatening to leak millions of gallons of oil and fuel into a very sensitive shorebird and penguin nesting colony.
Oops.
