We swaddle our baby in a Miracle Blanket overnight. The instructions say not to swaddle the baby for more than 8 hours straight. Why? Our baby would be comfortable sleeping overnight and for 12 hours straight swaddled, but wakes up when unswaddled. Is it safe to swaddle for more than 8 hours?

When your baby wakes for a feeding unwrap and rewrap the blanket, the reason is you don't know if there are pressure points. My son fell asleep in socks once, and I thought I could just let him sleep in them so his feet didn't get cold. They were brand new and not tight at all. I bought them just snug enough to stay up. He turns 1 tomorrow and still has scars. His cousin is 3 and she still has scars from a pair of socks (they didn't tell me what had happened until I told them about what happened to me). Pressure points are very serious for a baby.

I've never heard to a problem with long term swaddling. I would be more concerned if the baby is sleeping for that long a period of time. newborns usually wake up every 3-4 hours to feed. You will want to unwrap them during the feeding. I only swaddled my babies for the first 2-3 months.

In the maternity hospital were I work we keep our babes swaddled all day. Of course you unwrap them every 2-3 hours to change diaper, feed, play, wash, etc.. So if the baby was swaddled for 8 hours straight that would be neglect b/c they need changed a few times during that time. Hope this helps.

Obviously not if the instructions say not to. How would you like to have your arms and legs bound for 12 hours? Once a baby comes out of the womb surely he should be encouraged to move freely.

According to Arthur Janov (an American psychologist and psychotherapist, and the creator of Primal Therapy), the effects of swaddling on all adults' emotional lives is profound. There is a lifelong deficit on oxytocin and oversupply of cortisol, the stress hormone, resulting in a lifetime of rage and anxieties. Even rats lose hormones in the hippocampus and orbital frontal lobes when tied up like swaddled human infants, developing depletions in serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, exacerbated aggressive behavior and a severe decrease of social capabilities.
