Under both imperialism & communism, the people had no real say in who was going to lead them. There were no free elections under either regime.

I think it could be argued that the Eastern Europen states that became satellite states/puppets of the Soviet Union (some, like the Baltic states, were totally absorbed into the USSR) after World War II is similar to imperial colonialism/expansion.
