Most of the priests I've met are total booze hounds, so I really don't get this expression.

The expression comes from wine b/c of communion. They drink what is left over of the wine. A priest should not drink outside of that.

The expression is a joke. And I (when I'm not at work) often have the sobriety of a priest!

My uncle is a priest and he does love his afternoon martoonis...so...no, pretty much I'm not as "sober as a priest".
it might be a joke expression. It has to be!

I am sober but not as a priest. My priest in High school was the parish drunk. He was drunk at every mass. One time they had to escort him out of the mass he was residing over. I prefer to keep my 6 years of sobriety thank you.
