The ear can be trained... its more a matter of listening effectively than anything else. If you play a musical instrument (guitar is nice and informal) go through the song line by line. Get the person to listen to the music... sing yourself and show them where their voice should be. Most people sing where it is easiest for them to reach the notes, so they are constantly changing key. It's a mix of finding the right key for them, listening to the music and the other people they are singing with, staying on key, practice... and an awful lot of patience and encouragement!

I call them drunk friends, they only sing when they have had too much tequila so I don't think they will ever learn.
