Earlier today I parked at blockbuster in Tamworth. I run around the corner to use a cashpoint, come back and find a ticket on my car demanding £70.50. I've tried calling the company, AS SECURI-T LTD, and every time I ask for information on the ticket they merely say that they will take me to court and hang up, so obviously these people have no customer service skills to speak off. Basically I don't want to let this get to court, and I don't want to pay the extortionate fee they're trying to fleese out of me. Help!!!!

BE NICE Throughout. Check the locus. Make sure all the signs and kerb markings are in place. If any signs or markings are missing, the fine is invalid. Check with the local authority to see what powers have been delegated to this company. Check the ticket, look for errors. Appeal the ticket at your local police station and write to the company appealing the ticket. Keep a copy of all correspondence. Write a letter of complaint in the nicest possible way, complaining about the unhelpful staff at the end of the phone. Ask for a thorough investigation and a full written response. ask for acknowledgement of your complaint within 3 working days and a full response in writing within 14 working days. Harass these people. Make it your life work to make their life rotten. make them want you to go away.

There should be an explanation or directions on the ticket on how to go about either paying the fine and or contesting it. Are you sure this is a legit ticket? Here in the US tickets (even parking) come from cops for the most part. But they all get paid at the city town hall. So if this is so where ever you're from you might want to start there. Good Luck.

Many have suggested going to the police. Don't bother.

Parking enforcement has been delegated to local authorities and in essence 'de-criminalised'. The police are simply an agency working to enforce the law the same as the agency who issued the ticket. They cannot and (quite rightly) will not get involved in your civil (i.e. non-criminal) dispute.

I know the car park at Blockbuster you're talking about (it's a small world) and it is for customers only - you breached the regulations and I'm afraid will have to pay the penalty for doing so.

Oh, and I used to be a police officer in Tamworth!

Call the police for information on this ticket. It sounds illegal to me. If it is, the police will help you. You can also go directly to the company that wrote you the ticket. Face them in person, stand strong, and tell them your problem with it. If they still shove you off, which I doubt, take it to court. Let them take you, so what? Sounds to me like your chances of winning are good. I think they're trying to intimidate you, and trying to get free money, because they know you are afraid of NOT paying it! Don't cower, but stay firm, when they realize there is a chance they will have to go to court to get a small amount of money, but if they lose, they will have to pay all court costs, which is a LARGE amount of money, they will probably change their minds. Good Luck!

Presumably there was some sort of sign saying "don't park here if you're not a customer," yes? If so, pay the 70 quid and abide by signs in future. If not, perhaps you could maintain that you were inside the Blockbuster browsing and saw nothing worth renting.

Join the club! That's the kind of country we live in now. Those guys have heard it all before, and you pay up and shut up, or argue it out in court, with all the expensive risks that involves.
A camera caught me when I went into a bus lane for about 20 seconds in an unfamiliar area, and I had to pay up!
We all but live in a Police State, we motorists are considered to be fair game, and it's Open Season all year round!

Forget them folks, you go down to the clerk of courts where you
got the ticket and they will help you.
You can pay the ticket there and not have to go to court.
U may even get out of the ticket if the judge is around to hear your story and dismiss it and keep the ticket.

See if they have the legal authority to issue tickets, in the States only officers can issue them, not business's.
