i have a productive cough where I have gunk in my throat but I do not know how to bring it up. I tried hacking and stuff like that but I can't / don't know how to bring it far enough to spit it out. it just stays in my throat and i end up swallowing it.

Ummm... You should ask this question somewhere other than the "internet" section.
Though I don't think there is a "coughing up a loogie" section to Yahoo! anwers.
The way I do it is kinda close my throat a bit and exhale quickly.
