Hello,
(ANS) Human Resources (Yak!! horrible title really) or HR dept is responsible for determining how many staff the company or organisation needs inorder to function correctly.
This means they work out how many permanent members of staff & at what levels in the company and what level of pay they will receive i.e. pay scales. And how many contract workers or temporary staff should be employed at anyone time.
HR also deal with other matters such as how staff should be treated in situations such as sickness, bereavement, maternity leave, when staff have personal problems such as not dealing well with work stress or with a drinking problem, how many days annual leave (holiday entitlement), Promotions, demotions, the recruitment of new staff process, the sacking or firing of staff, verbal or formal warnings related to job perfomance, job apprasails.
HR also have to know about employment laws on issues like genda, sexism, racism, company law ie. how the company must treat staff within UK law.
HR usually or often deals with training courses, or on the job training programs. such as making sure all staff in the company get training on a new company wide software package, etc.
HR also get involved with the process of organisational changes, such as staff relocations from one office or site to another.
HR spans a large number of matters within the company or related to the smooth running of the company.
Best Regards IR

I work in advertising and deal with a lot of HR staff. They do many things - help other staff, draft, proof and approve adverts for press, websites etc to hire staff which takes a lot of time, take peoples applications, sift through them all, arrange interviews etc. It's also important to keep on top of legislation (which chops and changes continuously). Most people I know in HR have done it for years and really seem to enjoy it!

They hire, fire, interview, deal with any disipline issues, deal with requests for time off, sick leave, etc. You will also have to plan how many working hours are needed in the company and rota in the staff accordingly, answer to managemt about wages bills, there's a lot to it. Your basically running the work-force of a company day-to-day

Sitting down supposingly working out what they are having for dinner.
Seriously, the job involves a myriad of things among which are:
What we knew as Personnel.
Perhaps I am cynical.
