It was understood that a lunar eclipse happens when the Earth's shadow falls on the moon. The shadow itself always has a curved outline, so the Earth must be a sphere.

The Earth's shadow shows up on the moon during a lunar eclipse. The shadow is round. Spherical earth is one way to explain that, not the only explanation, but probably the simplest and the one that fits best with other observations about the moon and the earth.
