It helps you better understand the world, and function better in it. Also, with a wider range of knowledge, comes a wider variety of interests which you can enjoy. i.e., If you know some history about the ancient world, you may be fascinated by it and want to visit the ruins or ancient structures.

Theoretically the big picture of education is the continuous elevation and development of society. Educated people are less prone to violence and more easily manipulated through the stick and carrot approach. If it wasn't for education it would be impossible for big business and government to push Free Trade, Illegal Aliens and the Oil War down our throats. Think about it, ignorant people react, intelligent people compromise and "try to see the other sides POV".
Of course we need education but I think that education on the masses is now wasted. Less than 4% of the people that go to college end up with their targeted job. The country is overrun with lawyers, engineers, IT and business professionals because companies hire from overseas when possible. The "slave" service jobs require very little education, i.e. the illegal aliens taking all of the semi-skilled and skilled labor at what manufacturing is left here. You probably don't agree with me but it would be much better to teach the middle and lower class children how to "live in the system" or how to work at a menial janitorial or burger flipping job than to read Dickens.

Its as much an impediment as it is a necessity. There are a lot of practical day to day living things that are not taught in schools. Wouldnt it be great if everyone who graduated from high school could balance a checkbook or figure out their taxes or learn how you buy and sell a car and those thing? Instead, time is wasted on distorted viewpoints of history and other non-essentials. Basically, it is how we learn to comform to someones view of what we should be like and what we should know. Its a pretty anemic education, if you ask me. Does anyone ever learn anything about themselves? Probably not too often.

Statistically, the more education you have the more likely you are to make a higher salary throughout your life.
Getting an education can take many forms, and not every person fits the picture of formal education. College isn't for everyone, but it's a darned good place to start if you want to be successful in today's world.
Education doesn't have to be formal. I think it's equally important for a person who wants to be a mechanic to constantly be educating him/herself as it is for a doctor.

Knowledge can be achieved by almost anyone, or can be accessed by anyone these days. The benefit of EDUCATION comes in the ability to use knowledge successfully.....as in problem solving skills.... making educated decisions....etc.
Never turn your back on an opportunity to learn something.......you just might need it one day........

there any many people that have had it lucky enough to find their niche in this world with only having minimal college but in the end they all wish they had gone back to school at some point. Personally I hate school, its too rigid to me, but im finishing up just to have at least something to fall back on.

You might find out interesting things, it's good to know what others have created, because if you don't like it then you can create something bette or improve, and it's good to know other people's opinions about things because then you can agree or disagree. In order to label something useless you have to understand it.
But P.M. is also right.
