sounds like a shift cable problem, have to trace it down, sometimes sand and corrosion gets into the cable causing it to fray and therefore hard to shift,

Check whether your car's automatic transmission has a linkage to the throttle. If so, the linkage might be sticking. You might want to lube it so that it moves freely. This cable affects the way the car shifts to higher gears. If the cable is stuck or pulled prematurely, the car will shift late.

On many Ford vehicles there is a sensor on the brake pedal arm where the brakes have to be depressed before you can shift your vehicle into gear. This sensor tells the computer that the brakes have been depressed and it unlocks the shift lever are so that you can put your vehicle into gear. Look and see if you have sensor on your brake pedal arm, if this is so, check to see if the wires are connected, I have personally had a wire to come loose and I could not shift my car into gear. If the wires are properly connected, unplug them and hook them together and see if you can shift car into gear, if you can, then you have a bad sensor. Please have this corrected for your safety, That sensor is a safety feature so that the vehicle cannot be put into gear without depressing the brake pedal.

Either a shift linkage is damaged or frozen. If this truck uses a cable, then there may be a kink in the shift cable causing the problems..
good luck........
