Not real sure what a free sample site has to do with your problem, but I've found that, frequently, these large mixers, both Kitchen Aid and the older Sunbeam Mixmasters, seem to draw in the overflow flour dust that comes up when mixing recipes and it accumulates over the years on just about every little part of the interior or the machine. They frequently just need to be taken apart, which in itself is no small matter, and have the flour blown out with a high powered air hose, have the armature dressed and reassembled. If it seems to still have all it's speeds, without a load on the beaters, then the resistor is OK. You should find a reputable small appliance repair shop near you and ask them to clean it thoroughly. Could run about $45.
