If you mean you have a number --like, say, 5, and you want to know what percentage of x that number is, then you would divide your number by x and multiply the result by 100.
For example, if x stands for 20, then you'd divide 5 by 20 (getting a result of 5/20 or 1/4, and multiply that result by 100 ... so that 1/4 times 100 = 25. That would mean your answer is "If x stands for 20, then 5 is 25% of x."

This may be a little more simple: Example; if you want to know what percentage of 238 is 44? Divide 44 by 238 and multiply by 100.
44/238 = .1848 x 100 = 18.5%
