27 + 2 doesn't have to add to 30

27 - 2 has to add to 25

Yeah this is dumb. You don't add 27+2 to get 29. You take 2 away from 27 to get the 25 that the men payed.

The 30 dollars are all there:
The men payed 30
25 of the 30 are still with the manager or whomever kept the money. The bellboy brought 5 down to split among the men (there are still 30 total). He gave them a buck a piece and kept 2 (25 still w/ the manager, 3 with the men, the bellboy has 2). You don't have to think any further than this because the question is just trying to make you add something with something that it shouldn't be added with.

Amount paid is $9 x 3 = $27

Bellboy kept $2

Cost of Room $25 + $2 kept by bellboy, it is a total of $27. Thus total amount paid still $27..

U cannot add the amount u own to the amount u still have.

When return $3, u use $30-$3, so the $2 u should still less out from $27 and not add to $27.

There is no $1 problem.

What other dollar?

The problem adds the money the men paid $27, and the money that the bellboy kept, $2. But that is wrong! The money that the men paid ALREADY includes what the bellboy kept.

Men paid $27 = Bellboy kept $2 + desk man kept $25.

The men only payed 8.33 a piece and got a dollar back. So (8.33*3)+(3*1)=28 + the Bellboy's 2 dollars = 30 The one dollar is hidden in the actual cost for the room the .33 * 3

That's a good question for 4th graders, gets them thinking!

AN EXCELLENT QUESTION, it may appear as though it just disappeared. But really, its a forth grade math question and really easy. The trick is the problem told you that each man spend 9 bucks but they didnt. The men each gave the guy 10 bucks. The room only required that they spend 8 1/3 bucks. Then they got a dollar back -> 9 1/3 bucks spent. multiply that by 3 - 28 dollars. The bellhop kept the change, that theiving ********. Good stuff i really like problems like that.

its a trick question, the way you count the totals makes it add up differently than what its supposed to.
