aWell if your friend is registered any where go check that out! Nothing is worse thn getting 20 diaper bags! A safe bet is always diapers and wipes. They are a necessity and costly. Help the mother to be out with the stress of always needing diapers! She will be very thankful! Also onesies are great! Good luck and congrats to your friend!

I've fallen in love with gift baskets ever since I first made one. Go to KMart or something like that and buy a basket (it's easter season, so that won't be hard to find). Then, you pick out a bunch of baby-friendly items ( a rattle, teething ring, pacifier, baby book, etc...) give the basket a cushy floor (cotton balls, fake grass, etc.), then go to some store that does free gift-wrapping (I choose Bath & Body Works) and ask for a piece of plactic wrap and some ribbon. Fix it up nicely and add a greeding card (you can find nice ones in the 99 cent section at Hallmark) and you're all set! If you choose wisely, you may just spend $20-$25. No fuss, no muss.

Diapers are always a well wanted item however, people make a mistake of sending newborn diapers and well they are only good for about a week then they grow out of them or the baby is too big for them when born. My suggestion get them a gift card for like Babies R Us that way they can get what they need. Along with the gift card send them a card with maybe a book mark and the babies name on it or date it was born. So when they read books to the baby they can mark their spot.

A gift card from some place like Wal-Mart.
It can be for any amount,is easy to mail and your friend can use it to get what ever they need for the baby.
You can also send a check or money order instead of a gift card. A postal money order would probably be best, just don't lose your copy in case the mail gets lost or your friend doesn't get your letter.

I got a really neat present from a friend who was tight on money and the presentation of it was the best even though it didnt have alot in it.

She took a long piece of ribbon and clipped several onesies, a bib, a pair of socks, 3 birb clothes, and a coupon for a free night of baby sitting. She had clipped them onto the ribbon with clothes pins so that when I pulled out the ribbon all of the items came out and it looked like a clothes line. Each items was clipped on individually so it makes it look like more.

I thing she spent about $20-25 on the whole gift.

Good Luck!!!

Put together a some things. Get a pack of diapers, a baby bed sheet, some bottles... things like that. Trust me, she can NOT have enough diapers. Even if she's breast feeding, she'll more than likely use a pump or give formula on occasion. Like out in public or allowing someone to babysit. These are the things I had trouble with. Everyone bought diapers and he ran out in no time! Some leaked, I had to change his bed sheets more often than I had to do his laundry, so I needed a few of those. I have about 10 bottles and they never seem like enough. Whatever you get her, she'll thank you for it!

Baby Einstein CDs or DVDs

Lil Baby Gift Basket: you could send little things in it like pacifiers, thermometer, bibs, towel, bath products, ect

Baby Keepsakes: Handprint kit, memory books, scrapbook, ect.

Gift Certificates and Money always work too. This way your friend and pick up the odd and ends she needs for the baby.

A gift I saw at a shower once that was really cute was a baby food cookbook with a little plate, sippy cup and baby spoon with a lovely drawing of bunnies on the bottom of the plate, side of the cup and top of the spoon.

The mother loved it.

Target has a wonderful baby section. I am sure you would be able to find some really cute things there for under $30.
