Do you mean ETERNITY?

Means time without end and perpetuity etc. The condition, quality, or fact of being without beginning or end.

Cheers

I suspect the first and foremost meaning of "iternity" is that your spell-checker is broken. Do you mean "eternity"? If so, I can come back and say a bunch of fascinating things. Indeed, I can probably talk endlessly about this subject ;-)

Ok, I'm back. I am going to assume you mean eternity, so I will offer a few quick thoughts that you might find interesting. The obvious literal meaning is temporal infinity; time conceived as never ending. If the universe never had a beginning or end, then it is eternal. Even if it had a beginning (such as the big bang) it might still be eternal if time never comes to an end. But in theological discussions people often talk about God as being "outside" of time. God is said to have created the universe, including time, but just as the sculptor creates a sculpture but transcends the work (the sculpture could be destroyed, but the artist could continue to live), God creates time but transcends time, thus time could come to an end, but God would "continue to be" – although this language is confusing because such ideas are really beyond our ability to think about in rational or linguistic terms. In any case, this is the more subtle meaning of eternity for some philosophers.

But I suspect you might not be looking for something beyond a literal definition of eternity. When people ask "What is the meaning of life" they typically are not looking for a dictionary definition of the word 'life' – they are looking for something more like a philosophical "purpose". I assume you are looking for the meaning of eternity in this deeper sense. I can't hand you an answer to that on a silver platter, but I can offer the following considerations:

According to an old joke, "time is what keeps everything from happening all at once." Along these lines, time is sometimes thought of as an aspect of Being that allows for infinite possibility. A candle cannot be burning and not-burning at the same time, but over a span of time both properties can be true. In general, given infinite time, all possibilities in the universe can eventually unfold. If the universe truly is eternal, then this is probably the most profound meaning of eternity – the fact that all possibilities can eventually be realized. If we compare the universe to a student taking an exam, then given infinite time to take the test, the student should eventually be able to get a perfect score.

And on a side note, this notion of infinite potential is one of the many reasons why I don't believe in the traditional Christian notion of "eternal hell". If God is good and God created us, then we must be naturally good. So if our souls are eternal, then we should have infinite time to "pass the exam" and learn to be good. If our choices are truly free (if we are not created evil in our basic nature), and if our souls are eternal, then we should eventually settle into our true nature, which ought to be good (since a good God would not have made us inherently evil). If God set a limit to the time we had to take the exam (if we have to accept Jesus, or whatever, before we die), then we would end up with naturally good people (who made some bad choices during their limited biological lifespan) burning in eternal hell because they missed a deadline – which seems too monstrous for a good and loving God. So as I see it, the "meaning" of eternity in this case is that the idea of "eternal torment in the fires of hell" is inconsistent with the notion of a good, loving, all powerful creator.

Given infinite time, souls who are created naturally good will eventually BE good, even if it takes them a long time to "find themselves" and live in conformity with their basically good nature.

eternity often simply means existing for an infinite, i.e., limitless, amount of time, many have used it to refer to a timeless existence altogether outside of time.
