I'm getting kind of antsy waiting to hear from a couple grad schools-I already interviewed at 4, but have heard nothing from like two of them (schools I did not interview at) since I submitted my application. Admittedly, it's probably not a good sign from those two schools, but I'd like to find out. Should I call and ask for my application status at those schools? Or do grad programs find that irritating?

My applications have all been out for around 2 months.

It is absolutely acceptable to call or email to find out the status of your application.

Here's a hint -- if you're nervous about contacting the Director of Graduate Studies directly, call the department and speak to the secretary. Secretaries always know at which point in the process their department is in terms of graduate admissions.

However, the secretaries probably won't be able to speak directly to your situation. If you want to know more specifics, I suggest you email the Director of Graduate Studies of each program you're antsy about.

I will tell you one thing, though. At this point in the academic year, most programs have already contacted their top candidates with offers, but the students "on the bubble" are still being ranked. For example, in my program, we still have not decided about admission for a few candidates because we only admit so many each year, and we have to wait and see if our top candidates will accept our offers. If some of them decline, then we'll have a few more spaces in our program. See?

I really hope this helps. I know that waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking. Best wishes to you.

Since it has been awhile, I dont think it would hurt to call and ask about your status. I knew someone who knew someone that worked at the admissions office had said that it does irritate them if you are persistent by calling every single day. This stragety "might" affect your acceptance to the school because they are definitely going to remember who you are when considering your application. But in your situation, I would definitely call.

No, I do not it is a bad idea to check the status of the application but it does depend how long ago you have sent in an application.

Call them. It's normal and I doubt it would be irritating.
