As has already been indicated, your computer is set up for a United States keyboard. (This is the default.)

To change it to English (United Kingdom) follow this:

Click on Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options.

On the Regional Options tab select English (United Kingdom) at the top and bottom of that tab.

On the Languages tab click on 'Details'. Make sure you select English (United Kingdom) - United Kingdom.

You can opt to remove English (United States) but this may require you to reboot your computer.

Did you reinstall XP because of a virus? If so, that virus may still be there. You need to do a complete virus scan.

It could also be set to a different language:

Click on start button, go to Settings, and select control panel
Click on keyboard
Click on Language button
Click on properties
Select your country/region

Yes check the language settings on your keyboard. You can also delete from device manager and restart your computer to let the computer find it. One of the two will work.

Mr.paradox

Check your kb language setting. You may find that with the setting you have the @ character is mapped to a different key not showing it.
