This article is about people with red hair, also sometimes called Redheads. For other uses, see Redhead (disambiguation).

Female with red hair
Male with red hairRed hair (also referred to as auburn, ginger, or titian) is a hair color that varies from a deep red through to bright copper. It is characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. People with red hair are often referred to as redheads.

Red is an uncommon hair color among humans; at most, two percent of the human race is redheaded.[1] Red hair is found mainly in Northern and Western European populations, and their descendants, although it occurs in low frequencies throughout other parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. Red hair appears to be caused by a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation of the MC1R protein. It is associated with fair skin color, freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Cultural reactions have varied from ridicule to admiration; a common stereotype is the “fiery-tempered redhead”.

As well as in humans, red hair can be found in other mammalian species such as orangutans, squirrels, and highland cattle. Red hair or fur can be found in some breeds of dog and cat, and certain species of fox and deer.

Genetics

At least two gene pairs control human hair color. One gene, which is a brown/blonde pair, has a dominant brown allele and a recessive blonde allele. If a person carries the brown allele, they will have brown hair; otherwise, they will be blonde. This also explains why two brown-haired parents can produce a blonde-haired child. The other gene pair is a not-red/red pair, where the not-red allele (which suppresses production of phaeomelanin) is dominant and the allele for red hair is recessive. Since the two gene pairs both govern hair color, a person with two copies of the red-haired allele will have red hair, but it will be either auburn or bright reddish orange depending upon whether the first gene pair gives a brown or blonde hair color respectively. The recessive genes for both brown/blonde and red hair are found nearly exclusively in populations of white people. There is also a black gene, usually related to darker skinned humans.

However, the two-gene model cannot explain the various shades of brown, blonde, or red which may occur (for example, platinum blonde versus dark blonde/light brown), or why one blonde child's hair might turn brown as he grows up while another blonde child's hair does not. According to some research, [attribution needed] there are several gene pairs that control the light versus dark hair color in an accumulative effect. Therefore, the more of these that are dominant, the darker the hair will be.

Yes, red hair is caused by genetics. More specifically, it is caused by a common mutation that is found on the gene for blonde hair. That is why redheads often occur in families with light hair, or at least in families where the members are blondes during childhood. This gene is recessive, so that is why red hair is not nearly as common as brown hair.

Yes, hair colour is genetic. And it's not completely true that Blacks don't get it. It's just rare. I used to babysit a girl with dark skin and auburn (a dark red) hair. She was a very pretty child and I'm sure she's grown into a stunning woman.
