Contrary to popular opinion, you cannot get pregnant anytime, nor always during your period, but sometimes you can. I'll give you the quick and dirty about a woman's cycle and if you want more information, check out the book below that I cited in the sources (it's an easy read).

The first half of your cycle is from your period to when you ovulate (release the egg). Your temperature when you wake up in the morning is generally low during this time. A woman usually ovulates about 14 days after the first day of her period, although I'm more like 17 days and stress etc., can delay ovulation. You can't really get pregnant for the first 5 days of your cycle, but after that, your period can mask fertile cervical fluid (cervical fluid is the body's lube that helps the spermies get where they want to go, to the uterus!!) which is necessary for conception. So, yes, you can get pregnant during your period if you have started producing fertile cervical fluid.

The fertile cervical fluid can keep spermies alive for up to 5 days, and so presumably, you could have sex on monday and then get pregnant on Friday if the egg was released on Friday. Once the egg is released (ovulation), it is only around for 24 hours, and then it dies. If there are spermies hanging out in the fertile cervical fluid, then they can fertilize the egg. You can see how if you started producing fertile cervical fluid 5 days after your period, then you had sex, then had the sperm hang around for 5 days, you would be at day 10 of your cycle and so close to normal ovulation (14 days). (I'm really hoping this isn't too confusing!!).

Anywho, so the second part of your cycle is after you've ovulated. Your waking temperature is higher during this time. Your egg has died because it hasn't been fertilized and you have absolutely NO chance of becoming pregnant because there is no egg! No egg = no pregnancy. This lasts for about 11-16 days, depending on the person and then you have your period again and the whole cycle starts over.

There are a bunch more details in the book including hormones, when you can and cannot have unprotected sex (turns out, for me it is only about a week every month and a half that I can't have unprotected sex if I wanted to), when it is okay to have your period delayed, how to measure when your ovulation is (it's SUPER easy, just temps and noticing your vaginal fluid).

Anywho, I hope this answer isn't too confusing and is helpful! Women's cycles are absolutely amazing and fascinating when you start to notice this! Being on the pill stops all this, so this does NOT apply if you are on the pill :).

no,you cannot get pregnant during your period for the simple reason that menstruation occurs because the egg is not fertilised. Our physiology prof. used to mention jokingly that '' menstruation is the bloody tear of the disappointed uterus.''.During each menstrual cycle ,an egg, rarely 2 eggs ,start maturing and bythe 12th to14th day, the mature follicle ruptures releasing the ovum, - the unfertilised egg-which then is picked up by the funnel shaped opening of the fallopian tube and while travelling thru' the tube ,it comes to meet the guy - sperm - and fertilisation takes place inside the tube. In the second half of the cycle ,the fertilised egg is embedded in the cushiony secretory endometrium of the uterus , no flow occurs and closes the gate to further intruders,. if the egg failed to be fertilised , the secretory endometrim is shed resulting in your period flow.

Yes, you can most definitely get pregnant when you are on your period. If you are concerned about getting pregnant, go on birth control, or get an ovulation calculator.

if you are having unprotected sex, it IS possible that you can become pregnant at any time, the sperm can live in you for about three days. It may not be that common, but it CAN happen.
