It's an invisible ghost or spirit. They are often cruel and make things move. Sometimes they just play tricks, other times they throw objects to injure people and frighten them. They can't be harmed but can be banished through exorcism. Also the less evil ones can sometimes be frightened if you grow really angry at them.

You don't have a ghost of a chance against them. From what little I have learned, they seem to be attracted to children. All the accounts I have read include a child(under 18) in the house. The term means Noisy Ghost in German(something similar to that, perhaps), and all they do is create mischief. There was a case in Ohio where there was a poltergeist. Not only was this reported, but a reporter went out to the house and observed the events. Toasters and other objects went flying across the rooms. It is one of the few authenticated(semi authenticated?) occurrences of a poltergeist. When the girl was removed from the house, the events ceased. I don't think you can defeat them. Your best option is to move. Good luck.

No-one really knows what a poltergeist is. Some people believe they are the spirit of a dead person who has not fully crossed over and is angered by the world moving on without it. Others, that it is a form of psychic energy that can surround (or emanate from) a child, a psychically gifted person, or most commonly, an adolescent. Some witches believe they are entities from another dimension of reality that feed off human fear. Christians may see them as demonic. Poltergeist activity is characterised by the unexplained movement of objects, strange noises or smells, cold spots and in extreme situations, unexplained scratches or bruises.

Poltergeists are often upsetting, frightening things. Few cases are recorded where the witnesses are not convinced that the entity is malevolent (see the Roth poltergeist case for exception). I personally believe that they do draw their power from our attention. Most people report that as soon as they become convinced that there is something supernatural going on, that things get much worse. This could be interpreted as evidence that poltergeists "feed" off fear and energy.

As for getting rid of them, there are no established successful methods that I am aware of. It depends on your personal beliefs. Certainly there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that Christian blessings or exorcism can have a short term benefit but some also report a worsening of the phenomena. As a witch, I would cleanse the property and banish any negative energies. Some mediums and clairvoyants offer a form of "spiritual counselling" to encourage the spirit to move on.

I would suggest that you contact a reputable paranormal research group, such as the Society for Psychical Research. They may be able to put you in contact with a bona fide medium or investigator. You can also buy books on psychic self defence that may help the victim feel more able to deal with what is happening around them. If you believe you have a poltergeist, try not to let it frighten you. I really believe they enjoy that. Try simply ignoring it. If it is really aggressive, seek help from an investigator or trained spiritual leader.

Blessings and good luck

Well, considering the methods that work always just 'coincidentially' happen to be the ones that reaffirm the person's existing religion/world view, I would say you could safely make up any bullhonkey method you want and it'll work just fine.
It, uh, it must be because the power of faith defeats them! It's not like it could be that you're defeating a purely mental problem by using purely mental methods or anything.
UPDATE: Well, how odd. Even though they're supposedly real and hence you could objectively determine what they are and how they work, everyone's come up with a completely different explanation here. Wonder why?

A poltergeist is mischievous spirit, they tend to move things around the house and stuff like that. They are normally associated with a teenager who is going through puberty and therefore some think that it is the actual teenager who is moving things through telekinesis. I don't know how you defeat them, I think they eventually get bored and move on.

That's funny I saw this question) My moms house is haunted... A poltergeist in my opinion is an angry ghost A damned ghost if you will. you don't "defeat them" (we don't) when they poke at us scare the ba Jesus out of us and turn the gas stove on and hide things on us or choke my little brother) what we do is tell it to leave us alone and go away it sounds funny and stupid but that's what we do.. Try to listen to it, maybe it is trying to communicate with you or someone. there is a reason it is there ....

A poltergeist is a 'ghost' that knows it is a ghost and it is not just repeating a sequence of events on a loop.

It will interact with its surroundings and objects and people.

I wouldnt know what it's stregnths are as I havent experienced one in my adult life. But some can be playful and some can be aggressive.

Defeating them? Well excorsim?

well in my religion there are no ghosts but there are other species god created that we can't see, they live among us and they can see us and hear us,they are called gins, you might laugh at me but they are mentioned by god in the quran, I have witnessed so many cases they some times poses the body and sometimes the house, usually they are every where we can never see them, and how strength they are it depend how strengths is your believe in god the more believe you have the less the strength they have, there are 2 kinds, believers in god and nonbelievers the second one is the one to cause trouble, and we defeat them with the quran but the one who has been through this has to pray and read quran a lot to protect himself because you will be weak after just like any flue you need to eat to give strenght to your body , also you give strength to your soul.

A ghost. Strengths ? Able to paralyze one, shoot dangerous liquid into eyes turning em blind, face slap that could cause permanent damage & many others. You can defeat them by calling a paranormal expert, mostly in 3rd world countries.
