I am 39 weeks pregnant, and last night about 1:30 a.m. I started having contractions every 5 minutes. I had thought I had been having inconsistant contractions all day, but thought they may just be braxton hicks. I had gone for about an hour long walk in the afternoon, and had sex around 11:30 that night trying to start something up. Once the contractions started they were 5 minutes apart until about 3:45 a.m. Strong, but not unbelievably painful. They started in my back and moved to my lower stomach and then back to my back. A lot of pressure it felt like. Around 3:45, I must have fallen asleep, and didnt wake up until the morning. I am still having mild lower stomach cramps, but nothing consistant or too painful. What is this and what should I do?

Sounds like we are in a similar boat my dear. I am 39 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Last week, after having sex (to get things going), I had 5 hours of moderate abdominal cramping. I asked my OB about this and she said that my husband must have irritated my cervix. Cramping is normal--can be mild, or moderate, after sex and internal exams. As for the contractions, I too get these on/off. It is false labour though. You are very close now...but not just there. Keep up the walking and sex, and you'll have a baby in no time...(unless you're like me and still waiting around...)

You should see your Dr/Mid-wife to be checked for dilation but since you can type and walk you aren't in labor. Labor will usually preclude you from clear thought. Mild labor can last up to 5 days and then again it can progress rapidly. See your Dr/Mid-wife for evaluation and go forward from there. Until you know how far dilated you are you won't know how long it might take. Good Luck!

Make sure the contractions are consistent in time (ie: 5 or 10 mins apart) and call your ob/gyn IMMEDIATELY. She will probably advise you to go to the hospital; your labor is starting. Congratulations and good luck! :)

Seriously it sounds like you are really in labor! Call your doctor and let him/her know what's going on. Take a shower and prepare for the hospital run or a visit to the doc to monitor the baby.

Definitely call your doctor...my friend ignored stomach cramps thinking they were only cramps and she almost delivered her son in the car! He was crowning when she arrived at the hospital. It was her 2nd baby and he came quick. Turns out she was in labor all night...

Good luck & congratulations!

the contractions probably stopped... if you want the contractions to continue until you go into real labor you should walk around after the contractions start

It sounds like the early stages of labor. If I were you I would make sure I am packed and ready. Then I would go to the doctor. Just to be on the safe side.

CALL YOUR DOC! I was in labor with my child and didn't even know it! I was having mild "weird" pains. I called my doc, she said, go to the hospital. Once I got there and was checked, I was 6 Centimeters dilated!!!! CALL!!
