It is in Cheshire, but is on the border with Greater Manchester. The road signs say it is Cheshire!
Although, some sources say it is in Greater Manchester. See: http://www.manchester2002-uk.com/towns/stockport2.html

In fact, if you want to go down that road; Stockport was actually split into two counties, by the River Mersey. If you lived north of the Mersey, you were of course in Lancashire, to the south, you were in Cheshire. Nowadays, it's all gone out the window, as Stockport has been a big part of Greater Manchester since 1974. I'm from Stockport and I, like many others call it Manchester. Manchester was made much smaller by the boundary change, now having a population of around just 500,000. However, this doesn't count parts of Oldham, Bury, Trafford, Salford, Tameside, Rochdale and Stockport, which were taken away from the City of Manchester. I prefer to call it all Manchester, with a population of around 2,600,000.

Stockport used to be part of Cheshire, but in the 1974 . reorganisation of local government it transferred to the Greater Manchester County Council. GMC no longer exists as a local government body, so Stockport is now a Unitary Metropolitan Authority. However, it still has strong links with the 9 other councils that previously formed the GMC eg. Manchester, Salford, Trafford etc. which stiil use the GM Police and Fire Service. So the answer is it is no longer part of Cheshire - despite the post office still using this title - but forms part of the Greater Manchester group of councils.

Stockport is one of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester; it has been since 1974. Anyone who thinks otherwise, along with those who still think Bolton, Rochdale, Bury and Wigan are still in Lancashire, are living in the past or seriously deluded.
