I took care of my mother for over a year in her home. Cancer slowly killed her. She eventually passed away in 2000. I was able to quite my job and put my life on hold to care for her. She was fortunate. Why should our elderly be put in a home? the answer is - They shouldn't !!! - We need to care or bury our elders.

There are many valid reasons for a person being committed to a nursing home. Some of them are that a person has no family left to take care of them, and they cannot take care of themselves due to failing health. Another would be that a person has some family but they cannot devote their full time to careing for the person because they have a job and financial or other responsibilities. Third, sometimes even if a family has the ability to spend the time needed to care for a person in need of nursing care, they do not have the required medical skills to do the job. This would be a case if the person was a quadraplegic (completely paralized from the neck down). Such a person would need 24 hour special medical care only a trained nurse or practitioner could provide because they would need to have a urinary catheter changed, and their bowels evacuated manually, and they would also be on a ventilator machine that breathes for them amongst other things.

illness is very common with elderly people, and some of them need more care than a friend or family member is capable of providing.
