Be sure that System Restore is enabled, and edit the settings. Since you use the term, "Every time I try," it sounds like this may have happened more than once.
In the Control Panel>System (I used Classic View). Select the System Restore tab, and be sure it is not turned off. Under settings, you may want to increase the size if you have plenty of hard disk space. Also, be sure to set a Restore Point before adding new programs and making significant changes to your computer.
But, having said this, you will not be able to utilize System Restore with reformatting the hard drive, because it wipes it all out. You will need to do a back up (sorry, there is no real option other than optical disks or another hard drive), do your format (at which time you can set up a partion for your back-ups) and then restore.

I have had a similar problem with my system restore. It was not allowing me to restore from the restore point I had chosen. The only thing I can suggest , which worked for me is continue to select a different restore point and continue attempting to restore your system. I started from a few days ago to almost 30 or so days prior and it was rejecting the points until one was finally accepted. I think I had entered over 20 different dates. Anyway since then, there has been no problems with the restored system. It was very frustrating but when it finally accepted a point, it was worth the trying!!Good Luck and play around with the dates. You will hit one that can work with. I think I spent over 3 hrs finding one. Hope I helped!

Sorry bud, the system restore failed. The only other option is to try again with a different restore point or just bite the bullet and gather the resources to do a system restore, ie, the OS CD and drivers.
