i had to have one for medical reasons. I had one at 21 weeks. my water broke at like 17 weeks and wouldn't stop leaking. baby had no more fluid, and although still alive, I had to terminate because i was already going into labor and risk for infection for being with water broken for so long.
but i just saw a video saing "oh if u have an abortion, the stuff they use to dialate the cervix (i'm thinking the laminaria), will weaken it, and that muscle is not like a muscle u can work out where u can get it stronger, but it will always remain weaker etc).

i was just wondering if it's true and if i can still have a baby, and if anyone ever had a baby after such a late abortion

thanks

There is no hard and fast rule. An abortion at any stage can leave a woman sterile, but that is not usually the case. As for the laminaria, that will not produce any permanent change in the cervix. That simply is not true.

I had late miscarriages (3 at 18-20 weeks)and used laminaria to dilate the cervix. Although the cervix possibly may be weakened the chances you will have a baby are very high. Your doctor will watch you more closely and they can do a circlage(sp?) which stitches closed the cervix if needed. My experience of losing the babies had nothing to do with my cervix, the babies passed in the womb and then I had a D+E. See a specialist and good luck!

My cousin had a late abortion, but for many different reasons. She had the abortion when she was only 15 years old, which they say is the most traumatic in regards to having more children. She has had 4 children since this time. We all joke that every time her husband looks at her she is pregnant again. They always say that if you have had an abortion, you will have trouble in the future, but I do know that my cousin has had no problems at all, so it is not a guarantee that problems will arise. Just make sure that when you do plan on having another child, you go to the doctor regularly and take all the prenatal vitamins that are suggested- I do know that these do in fact help. Good luck and I am very sorry for your lose.

Your doctor will need to check your cervix when you become pregnant again. I lost a baby girl at 21 weeks due to my water breaking and my doctor had me deliver. He told me it was safer and less chance for infection than trying for a D&C. I have a 2 1/2 year-old son and he was born by emergency c-section at 29 weeks because his heart stopped while I was being prepped for a regular c-section. He was already half-way down the birth canal and when they pulled him out it damaged my cervix. You may end up like I will when I get pregnant again, and go in for the cervical stitching just to be on the safe side.

It is possible, but not likely. PREGNANCY weakens your cervix muscle, too! that is why it usually does not take as long to deliver baby number 2 or 3 and most moms I know with 4 or more say they start to shoot out like rockets! Try not to worry about your cervix, but be sure to talk to your doctor about any concerns you have, stress can affect future pregnancies!

as long as there weren't any complications from the procedure, there shouldn't be any reason why you shouldn't be able to carry another child. I would talk with my dr before trying to conceive again just so you are aware of any issues that you guys may have and if there would be any potential problems with the pregnancy.

Good luck sweetie! I am very sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you.

if that was the case, we would have a lot of women unable to have children. second trimester abortions are more common than people want to think they are.

im terribly sorry for your loss. try and stay optimistic. (i know, easier said than done) you can begin trying to conceive your next child in just a few weeks.

good luck and god bless.
