Levi Roots

Levi Roots’s debut single “Poorman’S Story” was produced by the great UK sound system legend Lloydie Coxsone.

It was the early 1980’s and Levi got his chance after building a name for himself as mc for the then champion sound, Sir Coxsone outernational high power. “Poorman’s Story” c/w Fred Locks’S “Voice Of The Poor” was an instant favourite with reggae fans and launched Levi onto the UK recording scene. He then went on to form his band Matic16, along with brothers, Patrick and Henry ‘buttons’ Tenyue, on brass section as part of a ten piece unit.

Matic16 with Levi as lead vocalist, signed to Jimmy Lindsey’s Music Hive and recorded the classic steppers anthem “Jahovah”. Then later on “No Money Today” for producer Peter Richards Regent Record label. The band was well known for their dynamic and vibrant performances throughout the UK and ledgendery UK sound system Jah Shaka, gave full support to the blend of music Levi and his Matic 16 were playing. He even did his own mixes from the original master tape for ‘Jahovah’ playing cuts after cuts in the dances he played at.

Levi Roots the producer set up Conqueror Records in 1982 and Matic 16’s third track ‘Say You Want Me’ was released. Later he debuted Mikey General with the haunting tune “Baby Mother” then Jack Radics first ever UK release, Dionne Warwick’s “Walk On By”. He wrote with and produced a host of other then up and coming rising superstars like Junior Reid, Half Pint, Micheal Palmer and many more.

1983 Matic16 breaks up and Levi’s solo carreer kicked off with another trip to Jamaica where he met and formed links with Philip “Fatist” Burrel long before the big man founded Exterminator Records. A session with the great Sly and Robbie followed and “It Ah Fi Burn” (7” Soundbox) and “Shashamane City” (cd ‘Free Your Mind’ Soundbox) was the result and other studio recordings, Channel One, King Tubbys and Aquarious followed as he attempted to “Bust” the conqueror label in Jamaica. The Tenyue brothers went on to join british reggae group UB40 and became world famous as “Matic Horns” Levi Roots returned to the UK and concentrated on more writing and productions.

1990s. It was a meeting with the then South African’s president Nelson Mandella, and new ideas for an album project that inspired Levi Roots for his next musical venture.

1995. UK dance music label ‘Kicking Records’ brought the rights to Levi’s Conqueror name and his new label was borne. A reunion of Matic16 wasn’t on the cards but the boys got back together to produce Levi’s critically acclaimed album “Free Your Mind” for his now brand new record label Soundbox Music.

One of the finest UK produced roots album for a long time “Free Your Mind” took two years to complete. It was released in the spring of 1998 and won positive acclaim from music lovers and journalist worldwide.

Levi Roots was nominated for best reggae performer at the prestigious MOBO awards that same year. One of the first UK roots and culture artist to be recognised for a major music award, Levi and his Soundbox Record label had arrived. Then the concerts, shows and tours took him to Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas playing in major festivals and venues all over the world, Montrux jazz festival, Geel in belgium, Summer Jam in Germany and Sierra Navada and reggae on the river in California USA. As well as trips to Turkey, Cyprus and Serbia working alongside some of the worlds finest entertainers, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Sizzla, Lucky Dube, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Maxi Priest to name but a few.

2000. Levi Roots carved out a solid foundation within the roots and culture side of the reggae business. His next venture as a producer was to take him to another level. The “Greedy Bug Selection” featured some of the best of Jamaica’s recording artists at the time. Luciano, Anthony B., Yammi Bolo and up and coming djs Spectacular and Tyrical were hot property on soundbox 7” singles. Recorded in Jamaica at the mixing lab and Anchor Studios. The rythem track was inspired by Levi’s original tune “Greedy Bug” a mixture of nyabingi, classical and spanish influences. It also featured another four pieces including a recording debut for the UKs ‘simple poet Jayzik Azikiwe’ with “Imagination” all 7” JA. Pre’s.

The compilation cd: “Jah Will Never Let You Down” features all nine ‘Greedy Bug’ cuts co-written and produced by Levi Roots for Soundbox. Earl Sixteen, Starkey Banton, Zion Train, and Mafia and Fluxy appears on the cd as well.

At present 2006, Levi Roots has recently recorded his latest studio album “Red Hot” for producers Mafia and Fluxy. Writing songs for an album project with Neil Fraser the Mad Proffesor, a follow up to their current co-produced double “A” side Soundbox 12” single “Push, Push c/w “Cool Me Off” co-produced with Mafia and Fluxy.

yes he did as pootle says.
I watched him on Dragon's Den as it is one of my programmes and loved him and his song. My daughter 17yrs said after that at college they started singing his song and looking for down loads on you tube. It sort of become a cult thing he then went onto Harry Hill TV Burps and I for one am so pleased he has done well.

no he did not he has never won any awards for his music. He lies averywhere he goes, We also question did he create the sauce with his 7 kids from 7 different women or did he stile it from TONY BAILEY?
