It's simple, because many of them are bitter due to slavery and past racism before Martin Luther King era. Like when some white parents bring their kids up to be hateful, some black parents bring their kids up to hate white people and teach them that people of other races are bad. While many of the older generation has had bad experiences in the past and because of white America many have had little opportunity, others (including some of the older generation) just aren't educated and are ignorant and holding onto something that was there 100+ years ago as an excuse to be angry. It's all in the upbringing, because of what happened, many believe that they are owed reparations for slavery or that life has dealt them a cruel hand, & more often than not the younger generation sees that and in turn becomes the same way. But keep in mind there are also many kind, hard-working, and decent individuals who want to better themselves and happen to be of African-American/Black descent, so its unfair to say "all of them are like that", as there are many black families that raise their children to be opposite. While I am not black (I'm latino/white), I have seen both sides of the story, & i can tell you that many blacks are very racist and assume someones race (including mine) and then there are also blacks that are kind and hardworking but have had indecent people treat them otherwise simply because of their race. Two wrongs don't make a right in either case though.

Because they want to hold the past on their future shoulders, the chip of past slavery and the 1960's and now the fatherless children are growing up poor and uneducated and blame their lives on everybody else instead of taking responsibility and making the best out of their lives. It's a excuse! And the government, left and right sided want to give money and make the problem worse. You can get money from the government to help the poor mothers without husbands live and the more children you have the more money they will give you to take care of them, in poverty of course! There are many great Black aAmericans today that have made examples to many. Every culture even the whites have been looked down on in American History, even the poor white immigrants that first came to American, the Irish people. And look at Oprah, she's a fine example how a Black aAmerican can rise up and do something good instead of having a pity party! And I do admire Bill Cosby as a Black American because he tells it as it is!

Because they are being treated so wrong. I feel so bad for them.
Like Black Dragon further up the list said its just not fair. All those people that are in prison for selling drugs and stealing cars and makeing meth and breaking and entering and raping innocent women are obviously all innocent. Its not thier fault that they do those things its all our fault, the stupid white people. I feel so ashamed, and sorry for all of them I just feel like its all my fault. I think we should let them steal and kill and do whatever they want because its the only right thing to do because they have been so mistreated.

To be frank, MOST Black American do not have the attitude you have presented. You are thinking of "Media" black people. Most black Americans are hard working, just like most other Americans.

Why are so many black Americans in jail and prison?
Because the justice system in this country, US, is not equal. Blacks and Latinos tend to get harsher sentences for crimes than their white counterpart, for the same kind of crimes.

Well i can only answer as myself, a young African American woman who doesnt think anyone owes me a d@mn thing. I have worked harder than most 23 year olds i knowin ANY race, putting myself through college, now working on my Masters. I do for ME. So maybe you should use a little intelligence and integrity before degrading an entire culture.

Because this is the prevailing stereotype that is favored when one wants to continually manufacture negative feelings and opinions about this particular ethnicity in the hearts and minds of our fellow Americans--the same goes for the second question also...sad...

Those are two very different question.

In answer to your first one: Do you know most "African-Americans"? It's awesome if you do. You certainly do get around! But of course you're generalizing, which is a no-no!

In answer to your second one: Several reasons:
1) More likely to be poor
2) More likely to be angry
3) More likely to get caught
