My car revs when it is in anyone of the following gears..D,R,1,2,3. I have tried to have mechanics look at it and they drive it around and come back saying that they didnt notice anything wrong. Its a 95 Explorer XLT with about 170K miles. This problem only seems to be when it is cold outside and has nothing to do with warming the car up first....meaning that after an entire days worth of driving it still does it. I thought maybe something with the fuel injector but have used cleaners and that doesnt seem to totally fix the problem...Any help would be much appreciated by myself and the people who think I am trying to race them at a red light!! :)

The car is an automatic, and it revs about 300 rpms about every 4 or 5 seconds until it runs outof gas!

I guess you will have to find out exactly what rpms you call revs up is. There might be a problem with the idle air control (IAC) but you are not giving me much of a clue. It is not uncommon for the rpms to stay up a little when you come to a stop but this is only for a second or two.

From what you are saying it isn't a few RPM's it is up and down and very noticeable........

I drug a good mechanic off the floor to answer this one...

This is caused by the computer not reading the fuel mixture correctly then it says oops too much then oops too little
There are a lot of reasons why.
1.vacuum leak
2.O2 sensor faulty
3. old air filter,
4.PCV old If you have never replace the PCV the do that first and look for a vacuum leak second. see if the linkage is moving by holding your foot on the pedal....do you feel it move...then look at the cruise control module.

Go to a shop you trust and take the main dude for a ride until it performs it's issue, They will go with you if you ask. They want to fix it for you.
If they don't have time, then go on down the road you will end up at my shop and I will surely go out for a short ride to see the issue.

It's probably the throttle position sensor that's giving you problems. Since you've run fuel injector cleaner in the car then they're eliminated from the problem. You might also want to check the air filter to make sure that the engine is getting enough air. Switch to a K&N filter and you'll notice a difference in the performance.

i'd easily not propose it. no count in the experience that your doing it to show off or what, its not good on your engine. not purely does it waste a hell of a super kind of gas swifter, yet you ought to harm your engine. yet once you will desire to, i'd propose staying around 1500 to 2500 rpm’s together as in impartial.

trace back the rod from behind your gas pedal. follow it through the fire wall and to the engine. I don't know if it ie electric or manual, but there has to be some adjustment to bring the revs down someware
