I have an old dell computer I got for free and it doesn't have a hard drive. I just got 3 free hard drives and I wanted to put one of them in my dell. do you just plug it in or do you have to do something special to make it work?

Before I did anything else, I'd make sure the computer boots. If you have a Win98 floppy or Win95, that would be a start. Boot with that and if you get a "A\:" on the computer screen go for the hard drive install. You need to do one more thing.

Reboot, hold down DEL on the keyboard. That will take you into BIOS setup for your computer. You're going to look for Hard Drives. You use the Arrow keys to move up and down the options in BIOS. Then you use Page-UP and Page-DOWN to change the options for Hard Drive is one (not two) and AUTO for the size of the sectors. Save Changes and Exit.

Follow the instructions on the link below to plug in the hard drive, with the power off.

Should work. And then come back here to ask about a Windows or Linux install.

In theory it particularly is going to artwork like previous. a number of the information on the previous complicated force could could be as much as date for the hot equipment board, video card and sound chipset and the i/o chipset and so on. in case you are trying this whilst booting up for the 1st time, pass into secure mode in residing house windows and do an deploy of the motherboards gadget drivers to over holiday the previous ones for the previous pc and then reboot and it may artwork type of ok. The video and sound and so on could could be achieved after the 1st boot up and you will could shop doing this for numerous situations to place in each and all the gadget drivers you could replace. i be attentive to it particularly is a discomfort whether it does artwork as i've got achieved it till now. one element, do no longer deploy too many gadget drivers at as quickly as and consider out to do it without warning as this would not continuously artwork authentic so do the motherboard, then video then sound and so on all in my view because it particularly works extra perfect and much less confusion as residing house windows needs to reboot after each and each deploy in any case. This in simple terms takes time to do see you later because of the fact the complicated force isn't too previous and the hot motherboard may additionally help it (connects).
