It's short for 'sustain'.

In some parts of the world sus means sustained
and in others parts sus is suspended

The second answer is correct. It stands for SUSPENDED... usually meaning adding the fourth scale degree to the chord for a brief moment (suspending) then resolving down to the third. It's that thing where you add your pinky to the D chord on the third fret (very very common). Don't listen to these jokers that are telling you it means sustain.

Suspended chord. Example Dsus4 would be a D chord with a G added...it would typically resolve to the Major Chord...changing the G to an F#
