Nikko is just two hours north of Tokyo and worth a visit:

If you go to Nagano, you should go to Yudanaka and Jigokudani to see the snow monkeys:

An hour or so south east of Nagano is Matsumoto which has a great castle - Karasu-jo (Crow Castle)

Having travelled around Japan a bit, the very best place for me is Kyoto. It's got an atmosphere unlike any city in Japan and many a foreigner has fallen in love with the place who may not be normally too keen on highly urbanised areas.

There is a story about Kyoto : Near the end of World War II, the American military was planning which of the cities would be just dandy to drop an atomic bomb. It was only the intervention of the then US ambassador for Japan that saved one of the great cities of the world from being sent back to the stone age.

I believe hanami season (cherry blossum) may be early this year and you may miss it.

Tokyo is a great place....Lonely Planet guide books give it a good run down.
